How would I know if my root canal has been successful?

I had my root canal done on Monday. It has been painful so I took painkillers but today I don't need painkillers any more. Does that mean it's been successful? I know some of them fail and to put my mind at rest I would like to know how would I know if it's failed and how soon?
Also, how long can I have a temprorary filling before putting a crown on?
